Landon’s new personal best striped bass weighed 18.1 pounds!
Mega Schools, Patience, and an 18.1-Pound Personal Best on Lake Lanier
Today’s trip was another great reminder that success on Lake Lanier often comes down to staying flexible and letting the fish tell you where they want to be.
Today I had Rex, his wife Angel, their daughter Madison, and their son Landon aboard, and they were an absolute pleasure to spend the day with.
We launched with the surface temperature sitting at 84.4 degrees and started by checking the same area that had produced so well yesterday afternoon. Surprisingly, the fish had completely disappeared. After checking nearby humps, ditches, and other structure without much to show for it, I knew it was time to change patterns.
I headed toward a river swing along the main river channel, where the wind had been blowing directly into a hump on the inside corner. As soon as I stopped the boat and looked at the graph, the screen absolutely lit up with a mega school of striped bass.
We quickly got the baits in the water, and the rods started bending.
The highlight of the morning came when Landon landed an incredible 18.1-pound Lake Lanier striper, giving him a brand-new personal best! The family quickly turned the trip into a friendly Boys vs. Girls competition, with Landon facing off against his sister Madison. By the end of the day, the boys earned the bragging rights, thanks to Landon catching the biggest fish of the trip. He started the morning still learning the technique, but by the end of the day he was fishing like a true Striper Sniper.
Although we stayed around huge schools of fish for much of the day, they were extremely picky. We were literally sitting over hundreds of stripers, but only one would decide to bite every so often. Throughout the day I was constantly checking bait, changing presentations, rebaiting hooks, and moving around to give the family every opportunity possible.
Eventually, I decided it was time to make another move.
We headed to an afternoon area that’s been producing lately, and once the sun finally broke through the clouds, everything changed. The fish became much more active, and we quickly put four more quality stripers in the boat to finish the trip on a high note.
Fishing Tip of the Day
One of the biggest mistakes anglers make is staying on a massive school of fish simply because the electronics look good.
Just because you’re marking hundreds of fish doesn’t mean they’re feeding. If they consistently refuse your bait, don’t be afraid to pick up and move. Somewhere else on the lake there’s often another group of fish in slightly different conditions that’s actively feeding. Finding the fish that want to eat is usually far more productive than trying to convince inactive fish to bite.
