August Afternoon Striper Fishing Produces Another Mega School on Lake Lanier
August afternoon fishing on Lake Lanier continues to be absolutely fantastic.
For today’s afternoon trip, I had Sam and his family aboard the Lake Lanier Striper Snipers boat. They were ready for an adventure, and it didn’t take long for the stripers to give them one.
A Last-Minute Change of Plans
I was originally heading toward an area where I had recently been catching fish during my afternoon trips. However, while traveling across the lake, I remembered another location along the way that had produced exceptionally well for me during previous summers.
The area is difficult to describe. It is not directly beside the main river channel, and it is not technically a creek. It is more like a large alleyway that cuts behind several sections of the lake and opens into the main lake on two different sides.
Because I had caught large groups of stripers there during the same time of year in the past, I decided it was worth making a quick stop before continuing toward my original destination.
That decision paid off immediately.
Sitting Directly Over a Mega School
As soon as I stopped the boat, the fish finder revealed that we were sitting directly over a mega school of Lake Lanier stripers.
I told Sam and his family that once we lowered the live baits into the strike zone, the rods were going to start taking off.
Sure enough, that is exactly what happened.
As soon as the first baits reached the fish, it was game on. The rods stayed bent, doubles kept coming and nearly every bait we lowered into the water produced another opportunity.
There was no complicated presentation required. We simply kept fresh baits in front of the school and tried to keep up with the action.
By the end of the afternoon, we had connected with well over 20 stripers.
Quality August Stripers
Most of the fish weighed between 10 and 15 pounds, providing steady action and plenty of hard fights for everyone aboard.
The biggest striper of the afternoon weighed approximately 18 pounds, 10 ounces.
I was able to photograph around 20 of the fish, but my phone eventually died before the trip was over. We continued catching them, but unfortunately, we were not able to photograph every fish that came aboard.
The lack of pictures certainly did not slow down the excitement. Sam and his family had an incredible time and told me they already knew they would be booking another trip.
They also said they now understood exactly why I’m called the Striper Sniper—because that afternoon, we were definitely sniping Lake Lanier stripers.
Why August Afternoon Fishing Can Be So Productive
Many anglers concentrate almost entirely on early-morning fishing during the summer. While mornings can certainly be productive, August afternoon trips on Lake Lanier can also produce some of the most consistent action of the season.
The fish may not always be located in the exact same areas where they were feeding early in the morning. As conditions change throughout the day, active stripers can reposition around travel corridors, open-water areas, oxygenated zones and locations that provide access to schools of bait.
That makes it important to remain flexible and avoid assuming that the morning pattern will automatically remain productive throughout the afternoon.
Captain’s Tip: Remember Your Productive Areas From Previous Years
Today’s trip was a perfect reminder of how valuable fishing history can be.
Stripers often follow similar seasonal patterns from one year to the next. When the time of year, water temperature and general lake conditions are comparable, an area that held fish last August may hold fish again this August.
That does not mean the stripers will always return to the exact same location on the exact same date. However, historically productive areas should always be included in your search rotation.
Keeping records of where you caught fish, what time of year it was, the water temperature, weather conditions and the type of structure can help you locate fish much faster in future seasons.
Sometimes the best fishing decision you make is simply remembering where you found them before.
