Lake Lanier Striper Report – Mega Mayhem, Birthday Fish & Finicky Summer Stripers

Thomas came out with the whole family today, and we had a couple birthdays to celebrate! His mother just turned 83, his wife’s birthday is tomorrow, and his son joined them for the trip too.

We started the morning on a nearby hump that I fish pretty regularly. Usually when I find stripers on this particular hump, they aren’t there by themselves — and today was no different.

The screen was absolutely loaded.

We started dropping herring and it didn’t take long before the Lake Lanier Striper Snipers were at it again!

It turned into some straight-up mega mayhem and controlled chaos. 😂🎣

We put five stripers in the boat pretty quick, but probably missed another ten bites. With several rods going off and everybody getting accustomed to how everything works, we even had an appearance from the Master of Messes. Lines were crossed, rods were tangled, fish were pulling everywhere — basically everything you expect when a big school of hungry stripers decides to eat at the same time.

Once everybody got the hang of it, though, things started running pretty smooth. By the end of the trip, I think we had officially turned the whole crew into Striper Snipers.

Later in the morning the bite became much tougher.

We searched several different areas and continued finding plenty of fish, especially around river swings and humps sitting just off the river channel, but the stripers were extremely finicky. We’d pull over fish and have plenty underneath the boat, but getting them to actually commit to a bait was another story.

We kept moving, checking different places, and eventually returned to the area where we’d seen the most fish.

That turned out to be the right decision.

We had another round of controlled chaos that was basically a quadruple hookup. We already had one fish in the boat and were getting pictures when three more rods took off almost simultaneously.

That will wake everybody up! 😂

Lake Conditions

Water temperature was around 86 degrees and the lake is very clear right now. One angler told me he could see his lure roughly 15 feet below the surface.

We had mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions with moderate wind.

Captain’s Tip of the Day

When summertime stripers are being finicky everywhere you go, sometimes the best move is simply to put a live bait right in their face and leave it there.

You can pull out every trick in the book.

Drop a spoon.

Power reel.

Change the way you’re hooking your herring — through the nose, mouth, tail, or belly.

Sometimes those tricks fire them up. Other times, especially when the bright sun has the fish uncomfortable, throwing more at them seems to make them move away from the boat.

When that happens, don’t underestimate patience.

If you’ve got a big group of fish underneath you and you know you’re around the right fish, sometimes you just have to keep a healthy herring sitting right in front of them long enough until one finally decides it can’t stand it anymore.

And once one eats…

Sometimes several more decide to join the party.

Big fish of the day was 20 lbs.
