I had Brett and PJ out today, and they brought the kids along for a full day of learning, catching fish, and making memories on Lake Lanier.
The surface temperature was 84.7 degrees, and the morning started mostly sunny. We began in an area away from the main river channel that acts almost like a cut-through between larger sections of the lake. We found fish there and caught a few, but I decided to move and look for some better-quality stripers.
We checked several humps located directly off the main river channel, and that move paid off with two or three really solid fish. After that, we ran into a southern creek and found another group of stripers.
Later in the trip, one of my buddies called and told me he was sitting on a good number of fish. We ran back toward the same general area where we had started and picked up another five or six medium-sized stripers. That worked out perfectly because the group wanted to keep a couple of fish.
The bite was steady, although I never found one of the giant mega schools we have been seeing recently. A few of the fish were holding 50 to 60 feet away from the boat, so I cast a large spoon beyond them and worked it back toward the boat. The spoon helped pull the stripers toward us, and by the time it reached the boat, the live baits started getting eaten.
One of the best parts of the trip was being able to teach the guys what I am looking for during the summer. We covered bait presentation, properly hooking the bait, keeping the bait healthy, reading the electronics and identifying the types of areas that are holding fish right now.
Captain’s Tip
One of the biggest mistakes I see anglers make is getting hung up on where they caught fish yesterday—or even a few hours earlier. During the summer, these stripers can move quickly.
Trust your electronics, search fresh water and fish what you are seeing today—not what you remember seeing yesterday.
Most importantly, take a kid fishing whenever you get the opportunity. Introducing them to fishing gives them a hobby, a sport and something positive they can lean on for the rest of their lives. Seeing those smiles while they hold up a Lake Lanier striper is what this is really all about. 🎣
