Chance with the birthday trip’s big fish — a fat 37-inch Lake Lanier striper weighing 25.3 pounds, caught on an 8-inch magnum spoon. 🎣🔥
JD, Chance, and their crew joined Lake Lanier Striper Snipers for a birthday fishing trip that turned into one they probably won’t forget anytime soon.
The trip was all about celebrating Chance’s birthday, and the birthday boy ended up taking big-fish honors with a beautiful 25.3-pound, 37-inch striped bass. The fish came on an 8-inch magnum spoon and was easily the standout fish of a day that produced around 20 stripers.
Finding Stripers in Open Water
Water temperatures on Lake Lanier had climbed to around 88 degrees, and the fish were relating primarily to open water.
Rather than sitting directly over obvious structure, we concentrated on water near the river channel with nearby flats, humps, and points. Once we located the right groups, the electronics lit up with fish moving throughout the water column.
That open-water pattern produced consistently throughout the trip, and we were able to keep putting fish in the boat.
A Birthday Surprise That Worked Out Perfectly

There was an interesting story behind how the trip came together.
Chance had originally planned to fish with me on Thursday. Unknown to him, one of his friends was also looking for a charter to surprise him with for his birthday.
His friend had already been checking out Lake Lanier Striper Snipers — which happened to be the same charter Chance had been wanting to fish with.
Sometimes things just line up perfectly.
They got their birthday trip, caught plenty of stripers, and Chance finished it off with a 25.3-pound fish that should make for a pretty hard birthday present to beat.
Everything Was Going Great… Until It Wasn’t
And then the day took a turn… 😬 The top cylinder was done, and that pretty much confirmed the motor had suffered major internal damage on the ride back to the ramp.
Unfortunately, the trip came with one final chapter.
On the way back to the boat ramp, my outboard motor suffered a major failure.
So after an excellent day of fishing, I suddenly found myself shopping for either another motor or potentially another boat altogether. At the moment, replacing the boat is looking pretty appealing, and I’ve been going through the available options trying to determine the best way to get Lake Lanier Striper Snipers back on the water.
It certainly wasn’t how I planned on ending the day, but I can guarantee it added another story these guys will be telling about Chance’s birthday trip for years. 😂
At the end of the day, motors and boats can be repaired or replaced. The part that matters most is that JD, Chance, and the crew had a great trip, caught plenty of fish, and we were able to create some incredible memories on Lake Lanier.
Hopefully the Striper Snipers will be fully operational again very soon.
