Lake Lanier Striper Fishing Report: Heavy Rain Has Changed the Summer Pattern
Recent heavy rains have shifted the summer striper pattern on Lake Lanier, proving once again that successful anglers have to adjust as conditions change.
Today’s trip started a little after 8:30 a.m. with Amber and her two boys. Surface water temperatures were around 84 degrees, and skies remained mostly cloudy throughout the morning. Unfortunately, one of the boys became seasick, so we wrapped up the trip just before noon after about three hours on the water. Even with the shortened trip, we still managed several quality striped bass and had two more fish come unbuttoned right at the boat.
Finding the Fish
The first active school was located on a hump adjacent to the Chattahoochee River channel. Once that bite slowed, we expanded our search and located additional fish holding along a long point before finishing the morning catching fish inside a ditch in a southern creek.
One thing has become very clear over the last several days: the heavy rainfall temporarily pushed many of the fish farther north than they had been. As conditions stabilize, those fish are already beginning to transition back toward their normal southern summer locations.
Pattern Update
Instead of relying on where the fish were a week ago, today’s success came from constantly checking different structures until active fish were located.
Current productive areas include:
River channel humps
Long tapering points
Ditches inside southern creeks

The biggest mistake anglers make this time of year is trying to force yesterday’s pattern.
