19 lb 12 oz Lake Lanier striper caught during today’s guided fishing trip.
Some days just seem to have a little extra magic, and today was one of those days. Every time I have a boat full of ladies aboard, they always seem to find a way to put a hurting on the stripers, and today was no different.
We launched into an overcast morning with the surface temperature holding at 85 degrees, and the fish were relating to classic summertime structure. We started the day fishing the edge of a hump off the river channel, where we found active fish early. After that bite slowed, we moved to another hump nearby and continued catching fish from both the front and back sides of the structure.
As the morning went on, the stripers adjusted their position and slid into the nearby ditch. That’s a common pattern this time of year, and staying on the trolling motor while paying close attention to the electronics allowed us to stay with the better groups of fish. Making a couple of strategic moves throughout the trip kept rods bending and smiles growing.
The highlight of the day was a beautiful 19-pound, 12-ounce Lake Lanier striper, along with several other quality fish caught by the crew. It was another reminder that overcast conditions can really keep these fish feeding longer and make for an exciting day on the water.
Captain’s Tip of the Day
One lesson today came from a mistake that can happen to anyone. We got on top of a school of roughly 30 to 40 stripers, but my trolling motor had accidentally come off Spot-Lock. Before I realized it, the boat had slowly drifted away from the school, and the fish drifted with us. That one little oversight likely cost us several additional fish.
Always take a second to verify that Spot-Lock is actually engaged when you stop over a good school. Small details like that often make the biggest difference between a good day and a great day.
As August continues, expect fish to keep using river channel humps, nearby ditches, and adjacent structure. If you’re willing to stay mobile, trust your electronics, and adjust as the fish move, you’ll continue to put yourself in position for success.
