Another quality Lake Lanier striper! 🎣 The fish were stacked on the humps early, and we stayed on them throughout the day as they transitioned toward the river channel.
It has been a busy stretch for Lake Lanier Striper Snipers, and with multiple trips going out, I haven’t had nearly as much time to post fishing reports as I would like.
The good news is that we have been staying on the fish.
Over the last several trips, I had Tyler and the boys out, Patrick and his son, and then returning clients Bruce and Greg. We experienced several different patterns along the way, which is a good example of just how quickly Lake Lanier stripers can reposition during the late-summer season.
River Channels, Channel Swings and Humps
Yesterday, the fish were relating to several different types of structure early in the day.
I was finding stripers around river-channel swings, close to humps, along the edges of those humps and around the main river channel itself.
As the day progressed, however, the pattern changed.
By later in the day, the fish had pulled away from a lot of the nearby structure and were concentrating much more heavily in the main river channel.
That gave me a pretty good idea of where I wanted to start searching the following morning.
A Hump Loaded With Stripers
This morning, I started looking for fish much earlier than I had the previous day.
I checked one of my favorite humps first thing, and it was absolutely loaded.
We got baits down and the action started quickly. During roughly the first hour or two of the trip, we were able to put around 10 stripers in the boat.
Those are the mornings you hope for as a guide — you find the school, get the boat positioned correctly, and everything comes together.
Once that group slowed down, we moved to another location and found another group of stripers with some better-quality fish mixed in.
Three Stripers Around 17 Pounds
The afternoon move paid off with another solid Lake Lanier striper. 🎣 Sometimes getting away from the obvious spots and checking those out-of-the-way areas makes all the difference.
For the afternoon trip, I changed things up again and headed toward one of my better afternoon areas.
This particular location is a little out of the way and is essentially a cut-through. It has been one of those places where fish can settle in during the afternoon, and it produced again.
We ended the day with three stripers around the 17-pound mark, with the biggest fish weighing approximately 17.5 pounds.
We never managed to crack the 20-pound mark, but having three fish in that class in one day made for some excellent action.
Great to See Returning Clients
Bruce and Greg were also back fishing with me after being out on the boat about a month ago.
One of the best parts about guiding is seeing people come back for another trip. Whether they return because they enjoy spending the day on the boat, because they want another shot at a big Lake Lanier striper, or maybe a little bit of both, I always appreciate it.
There is something especially rewarding about watching repeat clients continue to learn the fishery and catch more fish.
Maybe they actually like their captain too. 😂
The Lake Lanier Striper Pattern Is Changing Fast
The biggest takeaway from the last couple of days is that anglers should not expect these fish to stay in exactly the same place throughout the day.
Right now I am seeing fish around:
- Main river channels
- River-channel swings
- Humps near the channel
- Edges and ledges surrounding those humps
- Deeper travel routes and cut-through areas later in the day
A location that is loaded first thing in the morning may look completely different a few hours later.
That is why electronics and time spent searching are so important. Instead of fishing yesterday’s waypoint simply because fish were there before, I want to know where the fish are right now.
That approach has continued to put fish in the boat.
