Mega schools of Lake Lanier stripers stacked along the edge of structure during today’s bite.
The Lake Lanier striper bite was on fire today, with fish relating heavily to structure and some absolutely massive schools showing up around the edges of humps.
I started the morning with Colt, his mom, and his son. Right away, one pattern became very clear: the striped bass were using structure heavily. We found fish all along the edges of humps, and throughout the morning I kept running into one mega school after another.
Lake Lanier Stripers Relating to Humps
During the summer, finding the right combination of structure, bait, and active fish can make all the difference. Today, the edges of humps were loaded.
The sonar told the story. Instead of seeing only scattered fish here and there, there were large groups of stripers stacked around the structure. When the fish set up like that, it gives us a great opportunity to stay on them and put multiple fish in the boat quickly.
The morning trip produced some great action and confirmed that the fish were definitely grouping up.
An Afternoon Trip Turns Into a Striper Beatdown
After finishing the morning trip, I called my friend Lake Barrett and told him the fish were grouped up well enough that I thought we could really get on them during the afternoon.
That prediction turned out to be pretty accurate.
We went back out and caught 13 Lake Lanier stripers in only two hours.
At one point, the action was nonstop. We caught 10 stripers back-to-back-to-back, filling the tank with fish in a hurry. One of the better stripers of the day weighed 19 pounds, 10 ounces.
When you find a school of active summer stripers positioned correctly around structure, the bite can go from quiet to complete chaos almost instantly.
The Video That Wasn’t
We actually lined up all 10 fish and tried to make a video holding them up together.
There was only one problem.
Apparently, the camera was never actually recording. 😂
So unfortunately, I don’t have the screenshot I planned to pull from the video. Thankfully, the picture of the tank completely full of stripers still tells the story.
I also captured some footage through my glasses during the action, so I’ll be sharing some of that soon.
Afternoon Lake Lanier Striper Trips Are Producing
One of the biggest takeaways from today’s fishing is how good the afternoon bite can be right now.
A lot of anglers automatically think they have to be on the lake at daylight during the summer, but that isn’t always the case. When these fish group up around the right structure, afternoon trips can produce some extremely fast action.
Today was a perfect example: 13 stripers in two hours once we located the right schools.
Right now, I’m paying close attention to humps, structure edges, bait, and the way the stripers are positioning around them. If this pattern holds, we could be in for some more excellent fishing.
I’ve got both a morning and an afternoon trip tomorrow, so hopefully the fish stay right where we left them and Lake Lanier Striper Snipers will be at it again!
