Tough Lake Lanier Striper Fishing Trip Ends With a Bang

Some fishing trips are easy.

Others make you earn every single bite.

I had Brian and his two boys out on Lake Lanier, and this was definitely one of those days where the fish made us work for it.

We actually had a few good opportunities early in the trip, but unfortunately we lost some nice fish. After that, things got tough in a hurry.

There was a ton of boat traffic on the lake between the striper tournament going on and all the pleasure boats. Every time I would find a group of stripers, one of two things seemed to happen: they would move away as soon as I stopped the boat, or they would stay underneath us and simply refuse to eat.

We kept moving, kept searching, and kept putting baits in front of fish, but for most of the trip it looked like the skunk might actually win.

Trusting a Spot When the Fish Weren’t Showing

With about an hour left in the trip, I decided to try something different.

I pulled into an area where I had been catching fish recently, but when I got there, there wasn’t even a striper showing on the fish finder.

Normally, that is not exactly what you want to see.

But I knew the area had been holding fish, so I decided to trust it.

I hit Spot-Lock, put the baits out, and waited.

About two minutes later, four or five stripers suddenly appeared on the screen.

Then one of the downlines got eaten.

And that was only the beginning.

From Almost Skunked to Multiple Hookups

While we were fighting that first fish, both free lines took off.

We got the fish in, put the baits back out, and another free line got hammered.

Then another down rod went down.

In just a few minutes, the entire trip changed.

We went from grinding all morning and wondering if we were going to get another bite to having rods going off all over the boat.

That is one of the things I love about striper fishing on Lake Lanier. You can struggle for hours, and then suddenly everything comes together.

Sometimes You Have to Trust Your Experience

There wasn’t anything on the fish finder when I stopped.

There wasn’t a giant school underneath the boat telling me exactly where to fish.

It was simply a place where I knew the stripers had been using, and sometimes experience tells you to stay put and give an area a chance.

This time, it paid off.

Brian and his boys stuck with me through a difficult day, and I was glad we were able to finish the trip with some serious action.

We definitely ended this one with a bang.
